Crime: Scarlett allegedly held a win a date with a teacher contest, and took Bradigan to Dairy Queen. Bradigan said Scarlett then made a move on him in the parking lot of a Strongsville mall. Bradigan says a sexual relationship followed.
Sentence: Sentencing yet to take place.

Location: Dudley, MA
Occupation: High School English Teacher
Lover: 16 year-old male student
Crime: Emailing nude pictures and video of herself to a former student. Pled guilty to “disseminating harmful materials to a minor”.
Sentence: 2 years probation
Rebecca Dawn Bogard
Age at time of offense: 27
Location: Biloxi, MI
Occupation: High School Teacher
Lover: 16 year-old male student
Crime: Sent explicit text messages and trysted with the victim in her white Jaguar, which bore the license plate “GRRRRR.”
Sentence: Facing felony sexual battery charges.
Mary Kay Letourneau
Age at time of offense: 34
Burien, WA
Occupation: Elementary School Teacher
Lover: 13 year-old male student
Crime: Having sex with a minor.
Sentence: Pled guilty to two counts of second-degree statutory rape and was sentenced to 89 months in prison.
Fact: Letourneau was her victims 3rd grade tacher and began their sexual relationship when she taught him again in 6th grade when he was 13 years old. Letourneau gave birth to his love child while serving her 89 month prision sentence. Letourneau was released from prision in 2004 and was married to her victim (now 21 years old) one year later.

Occupation: Media Services Coordinator
Lover: 15 year-old male
Crime: Seduced 15-year-old William “Billy” Flynn and threatening to leave him unless he killed her husband.
Sentence: Charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Location: Clinton, MI
Occupation: French Teacher
Lover: 17 year-old male student

Location: Austin, TX
Occupation: High School Spanish Teacher
Lover: 18-year-old student
Crime: Charged with having an improper relationship with a student, a second-degree felony.
Sentence: A conviction on a second-degree felony could result in up to 20 years in prison
Notes: Competed in the 2002 Miss Texas pageant after she was crowned Miss Bexar County.
Pamela Rogers Turner
Age at time of offense: 27
Location: McMinniville, TN
Occupation: Elementary School Teacher, Physical Education and Basketball Coach

The only criteria for right versus wrong here is did both participants enter into the act willingly as equal participants. The teacher/student relationship is inherantly unequal, so if the student in question was an active member of the teacher’s class, the teacher behaved in an unethical manor, and should be addressed as a lapse of ethics, not as criminal behavior.
This model for addressing such lapses of ethics should be applied equally, without regard to the gender of the participants.
The entire question of age of consent is problematic, and creates as many victims as it protects. Each individual is unique, and readiness for responsible sexual expression is an idiocyncratic developmental milestone.
All I know is that attractive young women who initiate post-pubescent young men into the wonderful world of sexuality are to be celebrated and honored, not treated as some sort of sick criminal.

Most of these cases were really nothing wrong and both parties agreed on having sex. My cousin went out with her teacher and no one though it was wrong (I live in EU). United States really need to down the consent age to 14 years old and not put silly restrictions on teachers. Teachers are human beings too, after all.

I’m glad my teacher crushes stayed platonic. They probably looked way better naked in my imagination, after all…not to mention that my performance was DEFINITELY way better in my imagination.

-Random 20-year-old guy and 30+ woman = jokes about cougars
-20-year-old college student and 30+ professor = eyebrows raised in public, high fives in private
-25-year-old teacher and 17-year-old student = felony rape charges
Incidentally, the case of Heather Shelton shouldn’t even be news, except for the fact that North Carolina has such a ridiculous law on the books. I’m just glad that she wasn’t charged with a felony for hooking up with somebody she could almost have gone to school with.
